Oak-Leyden Developmental Services

Bestows Honors at its 22nd Annual Benefit

Oak-Leyden Developmental Services held its 22nd Annual Benefit, “The Secret Garden,” on Friday, August 7, 2009 at The Garfield Park Conservatory.

The festivities set amidst the flora and foliage of the Conservatory, featured an appearance by The Oak-Leyden Choir, comprised of adults with developmental disabilities, who performed during the cocktail reception.  Guests enjoyed dinner, followed by a program hosted by Mr. Wayne Messmer, whose voice is most associated with the singing of the National Anthem before many Chicago sporting events.  He is, also, founding partner of the two-time Turner Cup champion Chicago Wolves Professional Hockey team.

Honorees of the evening’s ceremony included the Oak Park River Forest Food Pantry who received The President’s Award for their significant contributions in supporting Oak-Leyden’s mission – helping people with developmental disabilities meet life’s challenges and reach their highest potential.  Over the last year the Food Pantry has been very supportive of the efforts of Oak-Leyden participants who have volunteered.  The volunteer work helps adults with developmental disabilities develop life skills that help them live more independently while they give back to their community.  The Mighty Oak Award was bestowed upon participant, Lisa Barany, for her personal vision that resulted in the development of Oak-Leyden’s Peer Support Group, affording other participants opportunities to expand their cultural and personal horizons.   Special recognition went to Regina Alexander for being Oak-Leyden’s most senior participant at 85-1/2-years-old.  Regina, an Oak Park resident, first came to Oak-Leyden in 1978.

Guests also bid on an array of silent and live auction items, followed by dancing on the Blue Stone Patio to music provided by Cage & Aquarium.  Proceeds will benefit over 500 adults and children with developmental disabilities served by Oak-Leyden.
